The History of Whitford

In 1955, an idea born in the mind of a gentleman named Al Ostheimer led to a gathering of sixty people in John Young’s barn --- once located across from the Club on Route 30 --- to discuss dedicating 168 acres of land for the sole purpose of sharing the sporting experience with neighbors in the community. The land, purchased from Wycoff Smith for $500 per acre, included a farmhouse and a barn, which later became clubhouses. From this meeting came an elected Board of Governors, established in May 1955. The Club’s name came from the nearby "Whitford Village," named after a town in Wales.

Before golf ever became a reality, fox hunting was the main sport on the property that was host to the annual "Whiteland Hunt."
The first nine holes were played in 1956 with the second nine holes opening in 1957.
The official opening of the facility, including the golf course, swimming pool and tennis courts, occurred on Memorial Day in 1957.

Well-known architect William Gordon, a pioneer in the achievement of perfected finish surfaces on greens, tees and fairways, was recognized by great architects (many of whom consulted with Gordon to improve the functional and aesthetic designs of their own courses) and designed Whitford Country Club’s course. Nestled in the heart of Chester County and a true test of championship play, Whitford Country Club continues to provide golfers of all levels with some of the most prestigious holes in the area.

In 1995, a major renovation was completed to the Clubhouse entrance, Banquet Room, Bar and Garden Room. 1996 brought the newest and broadest vision ever for our Club with long-term progress and development for the golf course and all Club facilities. By spring of 2001, a new Clubhouse office suite that added space and aesthetic charm was completed.

Whitford Today

Whitford’s course, and especially our greens, will challenge the most accomplished golfers while still offering younger family members the opportunity to learn and engage while improving their skill level through the Junior Golf program and by sharing recreational time with family and friends.

In addition to our golf, a full program of recreational and social activities is available eleven months of the year. Men’s and Women’s golf tournaments, inter-club matches, inter-club swimming meets and tennis events are arranged by the various Club committees and our professional staff. The members share particular pride in the Junior programs in golf, tennis and swimming.

From the initial stages of Whitford Country Club’s development in the 50's through many years of growth and with the long-range plan now fully underway, the Club continues to exhibit a successful futuristic vision through and with its involvement with membership and the various Club action committees.

As our membership's needs change, our long-range plan will continue to guide future leaders of the Whitford Country Club in a common direction well into the twenty-first century, enabling us to remain a club that not only listens to our members, but responds to the times.

  • Junior Golf
    • Supporting one of the most recognized Junior Golf programs in the area, Whitford's dedication to advancing the game of golf through our junior family members is unparalleled.

Want proof? Many of Whitford's current members were at one time participants in our Junior Golf program.

The Junior Golf program at Whitford Country Club has a rich tradition of success, teaching children to learn and play the game of golf. Each summer, there are numerous opportunities for junior golfers to learn and have fun while engaging with their peers. Junior Golf clinics begin in May and continue right through the summer, while designated junior golf play is scheduled one day a week.  Junior Golf is a welcoming program that includes not only opportunities to learn, but to enjoy the game with friends through on-course play. From pretzels and lemonade to entertaining games --- and the occasional water-gun attack --- a summer spent in the Junior Golf program is one to remember.

Whitford Junior Golf Academy is geared more towards the dedicated junior golfer and is open to all juniors ages 8 - 14. Generally, three (3) sessions are offered each summer, limiting the number of participants to ten (10) golfers per session. This allows a 5:1 student-teacher ratio which gives each student quality time with our professional staff. Along with four (4) days of group interaction and instruction, our juniors are exposed to competitions where the students have the opportunity to win prizes by competing in games throughout the day. Lunch is also included each day. All certified junior golfers in the 9 Holers or 18 Holers have the opportunity to play unaccompanied by an adult throughout the golf season. They do so by successfully passing a ten (10) question exam composed of general knowledge questions and a playing ability test.
