Whitford Country Club History
Past Presidents of Whitford Country Club
October 2011
Then.......
In 1955, a gentleman named Al Ostheimer had an idea to dedicate 168 acres of land for the purpose of sharing the sporting experience with neighbors in the community. Sixty people gathered in John Young’s barn, once located across from the Club on Rt. 30, to exchange ideas for the land which included a farmhouse and a barn, both of which eventually became Clubhouses.
Fox hunting was the main sport on the property where they held the annual ‘Whiteland Hunt’. The Club’s name came from the nearby ‘Whitford Village’, named after a town in Wales. The first nine holes were played in 1956 with the second nine holes opening in 1957. The official opening of the facility, including the golf course, swimming pool and tennis courts, occurred on Memorial Day in 1957.
Well-know architect William Gordon designed Whitford Country Club's course, a true test of championship play. Nestled in the heart of Chester County, Whitford Country Club continues to provide golfers at all levels with some of the most prestigious holes in the area.
Whitford’s golf course challenges the most accomplished golfers while still offering younger family members the opportunity to learn, engage and improve their skill level through the Junior Golf programs. Eight tennis courts and four paddle courts provide the racquet sport enthusiast with the finest of facilities. The regulation sized swimming pool, reconstructed in 1998, is filled with family fun and competitive team meets.
Throughout 1995 to 1998 extensive renovations were completed to the Clubhouse entrance, Banquet Room, Bar, and the Garden Room. 1996 brought the newest and broadest vision for our Club with our long-term expansion project and improvements to the golf course and all Club facilities. Spring of 2001 completed the new Clubhouse office suite, adding both space and aesthetic charm to the Clubhouse. The long-range plan will continue to guide future leaders of the Whitford Country Club in a common direction well into the twenty-first century.
Now.......
A full program of recreational and social activities is available eleven months of the year. Men’s and Women’s golf tournaments, inter-club matches, inter-club swimming meets and tennis events are arranged by the various Club committees and our professional staff. The members share particular pride in the Junior programs in Golf, Racquets and Aquatics.
